Chp. 1 Brief History and Mission Statement

The company was founded in 1854 by a Paris craftsman named Louis Vuitton Malletier. Louis Vuitton Malletier named the brand after himself. Louis Vuitton started off as a French brand on Rue Neuve des Capucines in Paris, France in 1854. The company's signature was its unique design of the first canvas flat bottom trunk covered by a waterproof canvas. Around 1867 other luggage and fine bag makers began to copy Louis Vuitton's designs. This made Vuitton change his bag design to beige and brown stripes. Louis Vuitton died in 1936; the brand name was carried on by his son Gerorge Vuitton. The company expanded its line into various leather goods such as small purses, clutches, wallets, and flight attendant luggages.
